In Turkmenistan there are numerous museums of great interest. One of them is the National Museum of Turkmenistan of Ashgabat, collecting in its eight halls precious evidences of the millenarian hi-story of this country. The most interesting finds come from Nisa, an ancient archaeological site of great interest in the neighbourhood of Ashgabat. The reproduction of the ancient city exposed in the mu-seum can be a useful starting-point for the visit of the ancient set-tlement. The most interesting finds of the National Museum of Turk-menistan are the gold jewels and ivory objects. The museum is open every day except tuesday from 10.00 to 18.00 and it is situated in a new building by the side of the avenue running to Berzengi.
In consideration of the universally recognized particular value of the ancient Turkmen art of weaving carpets, a visit must be also dedi-cated to the Carpet Museum of Ashgabat. The particular Museum exposes a rich collection of ancient Turkmen carpets which are real masterpieces of this art. In a hall it is possible to admire the largest carpet in the world, included in the guinness of records. In a shop near the Museum it is possible to buy Turkmen carpets furnished with certificates required according to customs rules in force for the expor-tation from the country. The Museum is open every day except monday from 10.00 to 18.00 and it is situated in 5, Gorogly street, in the centre of the city.
After leaving Ashgabat there are other museums that it can be inte-resting to visit. Among them there is doubtless the Museum of Re-gional History of Mary, exposing a rich collection of finds coming from the ancient city of Merv, the most important archaeological site of the country. The Museum is open every day except monday from 10.00 to 17.00 and is situated in 1, Komsomolskaya street, not far from Mollapenes street, the main avenue of the city.
It is worthy of a visit also the Historical Museum of Turkmenabat, realized in the mosque of Hadji Malik, an elegant building of nine-teenth century of great architectonic interest. In the halls of the Museum it is possible to admire a rich collection of finds dating back to the period in which this area was an important crossroads along the famous Silk Road. The Museum is open every day from 10.00 to 17.00 and is situated in 12, Altyn Kok street.
If you are in Turkmenbashi, it can be interesting to visit the local Hi-storical Museum, where there are important finds dating back to the period of Seljuk empire, established in eleventh century and remem-bered as one of the most flourishing moments of the Turkmen hi-story. The Museum is open every day except monday from 10.00 to 17.00 and it is situated in 2, Magtymova street.
